How Long Should a CV Be? The UK Answer, by Career Stage, and What to Cut First
How long should a CV be? In the UK, two sides of A4 for most people. School leavers and new graduates can use one page if there is not enough to fill two; senior candidates can stretch to three when the last ten years genuinely need it; academic CVs are as long as the record they describe. Prospects, the UK graduate careers service, puts the default plainly: no longer than two A4 pages for most applicants. The useful part is everything around that number: what length suits your stage, what to cut when you are over, how long the personal statement should be, and why shrinking the font is the wrong way to hit a page count.
CV length in the UK, by career stage
The right CV length is the shortest one that still carries your evidence. In practice that lands in a narrow band for each stage.
| Stage | Length | What fills the space |
|---|---|---|
| School leaver | 1 page | Education, part-time work, volunteering, one or two achievements |
| Graduate | 1 to 2 pages | Degree and modules that matter, placements, part-time jobs with results |
| Experienced (3 to 15 years) | 2 pages | The last ten years in detail, older roles in a line each |
| Senior or executive | 2, occasionally 3 pages | Scope, scale and outcomes of recent roles; board or P&L responsibility |
| Academic | As long as the record | Publications, grants, teaching, supervision, conferences |
| Contractor or interim | 2 pages plus an optional project list | Recent contracts in detail, earlier ones summarised |
Is a 1 page CV or 2 page CV better?
For most experienced UK applicants, two pages. A 2 page CV gives room for the last three or four roles with real results, and it is what recruiters and hiring managers expect to receive. A 1 page CV suits school leavers, recent graduates and anyone explicitly asked for one, and it is more common in the US, where the one page resume is a stronger convention.
One or two page CV is not a question of discipline, it is a question of evidence. If you have two pages of specific, relevant achievements, cutting to one throws evidence away. If you have one page of evidence and a page of padding, the padding is doing you harm.
Two practical rules settle the edge cases. First, fill whole pages: a CV that runs one and a half pages looks unfinished, so either tighten to one or develop to two. Second, two pages means two sides of A4, not two sheets printed on both sides.
How long should a graduate CV be, and a CV for a senior position?
Graduates. The ideal CV length for a graduate is usually one full page, or two if you have placements, part-time work and projects with real outcomes. Put education first, list the modules or dissertation only where they relate to the job, and treat part-time work as experience with dates and results. A graduate CV stretched to two pages with a long hobbies section reads as padding.
Senior positions. How long should a CV be for a senior position? Two pages in most cases, three when the scope genuinely needs it. Senior readers want scale (budget, team, revenue, geography) and outcomes for the last ten years; they do not need your graduate scheme in detail. A short executive summary and a tight first page matter more at this level, because the reader is often a board member or headhunter skimming a long list.
Career changers. Keep to two pages and spend the first half of page one on the transferable evidence. The structure question (chronological or skills-based) is covered in the five CV formats and who each suits.
When three pages is fine, and when it is not
Prospects notes that a longer CV may be needed for people in high-level roles. A three-page CV earns its length when the third page carries something a reader needs: a publications list, a technical project history for a contractor, or board-level responsibilities that genuinely do not fit.
It does not earn its length when the third page is your first job in 2004 described in the same detail as your current one. The test is simple: would a reader deciding whether to interview you miss anything on page three if it vanished? If not, it goes.
What to cut first when your CV is too long
In this order. Each step costs you less than the next.
- The 'References available on request' line. It is assumed.
- Hobbies and interests, unless they are specific and relevant to the role.
- Responsibilities that every person in the job would have had. Keep what you did that someone else might not have.
- Old roles in full. Anything more than about ten years ago becomes one line: title, employer, years.
- Duplicated skills. If the skill is evident from a bullet, it does not need repeating in a skills list.
- Adjectives in the profile. 'Hard-working, dedicated and passionate' fits on any CV, so it tells the reader nothing.
- Your full address, date of birth and photo. None is expected on a UK CV, and the National Careers Service advises leaving out your age, date of birth, marital status and nationality.
Do not shrink the font to fit
The tempting way to hit two pages is 9pt type and 1cm margins. It produces a CV that is technically two pages and practically unreadable, and readers notice. The National Careers Service recommends a clear font at size 11 or bigger; keep to that and cut content instead.
If your career is long and genuinely full, a compact layout is the honest alternative to tiny type: tighter spacing between sections, dates in a consistent column, and older roles collapsed to one line. Our UK CV layout examples include a compact layout alongside the others, and the CV formatting guide covers the spacing rules that make a dense page still readable.
How long should a CV personal statement be?
Three or four lines, roughly 50 to 80 words. The National Careers Service describes the personal profile as a few short lines that sum up who you are and what you hope to do, and that is the right scale. The profile sits in the most-read part of the page, so every extra line pushes your current job further down.
The same applies to a CV summary under any other name, whether it is called a personal profile, a professional summary or an executive summary. A useful test: every sentence in it should be something that could be false about someone else in your field. If it could be true of anyone, cut it.
How long should each job description be?
For recent roles, two or three lines of context (the National Careers Service suggests describing what you did in about two to three lines) followed by three to six bullets carrying results. For roles more than about ten years old, a single line with title, employer and dates is enough. The point of the detail is the evidence, so a bullet with a number in it is worth more than three without.
Check your length on a real page, not in a draft
Length changes with layout. The same content can be one and three-quarter pages in one template and two and a quarter in another, which is why people end up fiddling with margins at midnight. The quicker way is to see your actual content in a few layouts and pick the one that lands on whole pages.
ConnectIQ reads your existing CV into a structured record and renders it in any of 57 templates, including compact and two-page layouts, so you can see the page count change as you switch. The first conversion is free, with no card, and exports a PDF and a Word version. Nothing is invented or dropped by the layout change itself; trimming the content is still your decision, which is how it should be.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a CV be in the UK?
Two sides of A4 for most people. One page for school leavers and some graduates; up to three for senior roles where the extra page carries real evidence; longer for academic CVs, which list publications, grants and teaching.
Is a 2 page CV too long?
No. Two pages is the UK default for experienced candidates and what most recruiters expect. What matters is that both pages carry relevant evidence, and that the first half of page one shows your current role and strongest results.
Is a one page CV better?
Only if you are early in your career or have been asked for one. For experienced candidates, cutting to one page usually means cutting evidence. Fill whole pages: a one-and-a-half page CV looks unfinished.
How long should a CV summary or personal profile be on a CV?
The same as a personal statement: three or four lines. Whether it is labelled profile, summary or executive summary, it should fit above the fold on page one and leave room for your current role to be seen.
Is there a two page CV template in Word?
Word includes CV templates under File, New, search for CV. Check the one you pick uses headings and tab stops rather than tables or text boxes, then fill both pages. Alternatively, put your existing CV into a two-page layout on ConnectIQ and export it as Word and PDF.
How long should a CV personal statement be?
Three or four lines, about 50 to 80 words. It should say what you do, at what level and what you are looking for, with at least one specific detail that could not describe just anyone.
Can a CV be 3 pages?
Yes, for senior, technical contractor or academic CVs where the third page holds something a reader needs. If page three only describes roles from many years ago in detail, summarise those roles in a line each instead.
Should I reduce the font size to fit my CV on two pages?
No. Keep body text at 11pt or larger, as the National Careers Service recommends, and cut content instead: old roles to one line, generic responsibilities out, adjectives out of the profile.
