The executive CV format

An executive CV format leads with a short profile that states scope: the size of the business, the budget or P&L you held, the teams you led and the result you are known for. Then come the last ten to fifteen years in detail, with earlier roles reduced to a line each. Board appointments, non-executive roles and trusteeships deserve their own short section.

Two pages is the norm; three is acceptable for a long board career if every line earns its place. Figures matter more at this level, so make sure each one sits under the role where it happened. A number that has drifted to the wrong employer is the kind of detail a chair or search consultant will check.

Non-executive and portfolio careers need a slightly different shape: a short section for current board roles, each with the organisation, the committee you chair or sit on and the year appointed, ahead of the executive history that qualifies you for them. Keep that section factual; the profile is where you explain the thread that connects the roles.

Executive CV examples in the library

Belgravia, Mayfair and St James use our executive layout: a centred name, ruled header and wide margins, closer to a well-set letter than a form. Knightsbridge is a classic single column with a stronger typographic hierarchy, and Chelsea adds a coloured banner for a commercial leadership role.

Kensington puts a right-hand sidebar beside the career history, which suits a CV a chair or search partner will read directly rather than one uploaded to a portal. Every preview is a real render of the same sample candidate, so these executive CV examples show layout rather than padding. Compare them on the CV templates page, or see the more conventional professional CV templates.

Executive CVs and search firms

Executive search firms usually reformat a CV onto their own house template before a client sees it. A clean, single-column executive CV moves through that process intact; a heavily designed one tends to lose detail on the way. If you run the search firm, ConnectIQ for recruiters puts every candidate onto your own branded layout.

How long should an executive CV be?

Two sides of A4 for most directors and senior leaders. Three pages is acceptable for a long board or non-executive career, provided the earlier roles are condensed and nothing is padding.

What should an executive CV include?

A profile that states scope and results, a career history focused on the last ten to fifteen years, board and non-executive roles, professional qualifications and a short education section. Leave out photos, date of birth and a full home address.

Is the executive CV format different from a standard CV?

The structure is the same reverse-chronological order. What changes is the emphasis: scope, decisions and measurable outcomes rather than duties, and more selectivity about what makes the cut.

Should an executive CV have a photo?

No, not for UK roles. Your LinkedIn profile carries the photo; the CV should carry the evidence.

Do executive CV templates work with online applications?

The single-column ones do: Knightsbridge and the executive layouts keep one main column that reads in order. Keep a sidebar layout such as Kensington for CVs a person will read directly.
