Executive resume formatting that recruiters expect

Executive resume formatting starts with a headline under your name and a short summary that states scope: revenue or P&L owned, team size, markets, and the result you are hired to repeat. Experience follows in reverse-chronological order, with the last ten to fifteen years in detail and earlier roles condensed to a line. Board seats and advisory roles get their own section.

Two pages is standard at this level. Keep every number tied to the role where it happened, and prefer one strong metric per bullet over three weak ones. Executive recruiters read for judgment, and a crowded page suggests the opposite.

Six templates for an executive resume

Belgravia, Mayfair and St James use our executive layout, with a centered name, ruled header and wide margins. Knightsbridge is a classic single column with a firmer type hierarchy, and Chelsea adds a colored banner for a commercial leader.

Kensington places a right-hand sidebar beside the career history; it works best for a resume a search partner or board member reads directly. Each preview is a real render of the same sample candidate. Think of each one as a sample executive resume template you can see with real content in it before you choose. Board, advisory and interim roles

Senior candidates often carry board seats, advisory roles or interim assignments alongside a main career. Give board and advisory roles their own short section with the organization, committee and year. Interim and fractional engagements can be grouped under one heading with the client, scope and dates, so the resume reads as one career rather than a series of gaps.

Keep the executive resume formatting consistent across all of it: same date style, same heading treatment, same bullet length. At this level the document itself is evidence of judgment.

What makes an executive resume template different?

More white space, a restrained header and room for a summary that states scope. The structure is still reverse-chronological; the layout simply gives senior experience space to read as decisions rather than duties.

How long should an executive resume be?

Two pages for most VP, director and C-suite candidates. A third page is rarely needed; condense roles older than fifteen years to a line each.

Which template do most employers prefer for resumes?

A clean, reverse-chronological layout with one main column, clear headings and dates aligned on every role. That holds at executive level too; restraint reads as confidence.

Can I edit an executive resume template in Word?

Yes. Every template exports an editable Word file alongside the PDF. The PDF is the exact layout; the Word version is a close approximation you can keep editing.
